‘SWEET 16’ PUT MCNALLY ON GRID 1 FOR UTES IN QLD
19 July 2008
Glenn McNally did exactly what he had to do today in the V8 Utes at Queensland Raceway to keep his weekend on track for a strong finish when he forged his way to 16th place in Race 1.
After qualifying 23rd in this morning’s session Glenn knew he had his work cut out to make his way into the top 16 in order to benefit from the reverse-top-16 Race 2 tomorrow.
“I can’t say I was happy with 23rd place,” Glenn said.
“But I have not had a lot of quality track time so the result is really just a reflection of that.”
With the challenge ahead, Glenn focused on making it into the top 16 in Race 1.
With a strong charge forward Glenn was up to 16th by lap 6 of the 11 lap race and looked to be heading for a grid 1 start in Race 2.
“Everything was going well; I had made up 7 places and just had to make it to the end of the race in that position.”
On lap 7 the safety car interrupted the flow of the race which put Glenn under pressure on the restart because he was in the position that all behind him wanted.
After the restart Glenn ran wide on turn 3 and lost two positions.
“I just put a wheel off the track and that was enough to let a few guys past,” Glenn said.
“It looked like it would be a costly mistake.”
Not being one to give up easily, Glenn pushed on and regained both places in the last two laps to put him on Grid 1 for tomorrow’s Race 2.
“I almost blew it; but in the end I did what I had to do to keep the meeting on track,” Glenn said.
Starting from grid 1 tomorrow gives Glenn the perfect chance for a top result but also puts him right in the spotlight.
“All I can do is have a go and see where we end up tomorrow.”
Race 2 is at 8.30am tomorrow with Race 3 at 12.30pm.
