EASTERN CREEK DRAMAS FOR MCNALLY IN RACE 1
8 March 2008
West Coast Racing’s Glenn McNally overcame yesterday’s mechanical woes to qualify a strong 15th in the V8 Utes earlier today before a race ending collision on the first lap of Race 1 at Eastern Creek.
McNally gained four seconds overnight after resolving mechanical issues from Friday in his run to 15th on the grid, his best qualifying result to date.
“We worked out the problem that plagued us during practice and rectified it for qualifying where we improved to 15th on the grid,” McNally said.
“The baffle in the muffler had broken off and fallen into the collector (where two pipes become one) severely limiting the performance of the engine with the exhaust effectively reduced to the size of a 50-cent coin.”
After a flying start in the opening race McNally found himself on the dirty side of the track that offered little grip in the hustle and bustle of the first lap and locked up all four tyres when he was forced to avoid an incident ahead.
“Entering turn two I was on the inside of the corner where there was little, if no grip at all,” he said.
“Just in front of me a few drivers got baulked and dramatically slowed entering the braking zone of turn two, I had to turn left and brake to avoid the car in front, but the rear end just stepped out.
“I manage to correct the rear, but by then I was on the grass and a passenger with all four tyres locked up before crashing into the cars ahead.”
The West Coast Racing crew will work through the night to repair the damaged Commodore Ute in a bid to salvage points in tomorrow’s two races and give McNally important track-time in the competitive series.
The reverse-top-16 Race 2 commences at 9:45am while the final V8 Ute race at Eastern Creek is scheduled for 2:00pm.
